Book Review: “Sins & Needles” by Karina Halle
“Sins & Needles” by Karina Halle
Ellie Watt is used to starting over. The daughter of a grifting team, Ellie spent her childhood being used as a pawn in her parents’ latest scam. Now she’s much older, wiser and ready to give her con artist life a rest. But returning to the dry desert town of Palm Valley, California means one more temptation than she bargained for – Camden McQueen. Once known as the high school weirdo, Camden is bigger and badder than the boy he used to be and a talented tattoo artist with his own thriving business. Ellie’s counting on Camden still being in love with her but what she’s not counting on is how easily unrequited love can turn into obsession over time. When Camden discovers Ellie’s plan to con him, he makes her a deal she doesn’t dare refuse, but her freedom comes with a price and it’s one that takes both Ellie and Camden down a dangerous road.
This is one of these books that after reading you want to go outside and scream and scream and SCREAM! It’s not an easy book. Yes, there is romance. Yes, there are some hot scenes. But this is not a romance like others and these hot scenes aren’t just love or sex but something deeper. A dark need to belong. To feel home. Because these characters in their short lives they have lived like immortals. They have seen the ugliness of the world and they have been rejected. And they are like wild animals. When they are corned by someone they fight. And it gets ugly.
The characters in this story are definitely damaged. Unique but damaged. From their early years in this life they have problems. Bad families, no friends, uncertain future. And it doesn’t getting any better when they are older. Ellie is following the path of their parents. She is a con artist. Her ex boyfriend is as bad as it gets and although it’s obvious that she doesn’t want to continue this life, she has lost hope and she believes that she can’t do anything else. Just when she thinks that she will do one last job and leave the only city she thinks as a home, everything goes wrong. She is a woman who made so many mistakes in the past. Driven by the need of revenge, she fell in love with a very dangerous man and now after six years she’s still hiding. Without money and with no many skills she doesn’t try very hard to find a legal job and she chooses, as always, the easy way. Ellie doesn’t like herself much. It’s easy to see that. But she’s not a bad person. She didn’t have people to rely on. Her parents made her that way and when she was younger she was too weak to follow another path.
Camden is very different from all the other male characters that I love. But I love him nonetheless! After his horrible time in school and the bullying from the other kids he isn’t the same person anymore. Now he is a sexy as hell tattoo artist with some big problems. His number one problem? The girl he knew from school and her attempt to rob him. Because after this attempt all hell broke loose. What I liked most? Although he has his own demons, he wants to help Ellie and he isn’t afraid of his feelings.
I don’t want to say anything about the plot because you have to read it but I want to say something about the ending. WTF???????? This cliffhanger is killing me!!!!
